Thanks to improved health care and medical technology, many more babies reach the important milestone of their first birthday. Celebrate with parents, family and friends . 

Step 1. INVITATIONS. Decide who to invite. Babies are fascinated with other babies and children. Since she is too young for play dates, I hope you have a cousin or friend's baby that is close to one year old. It makes the party that much more interesting. Once you have the guest list, you know how much room you need and how much food you need to prepare.

Step 2. LOCATION. Babies are easier to handle at home. Babies who are not used to crowds may be overwhelmed by the people and noise of her first birthday party. Be sensitive to her feelings. This is her day and her party. Make her happy.

Step 3. THEME. At this age, the theme is more for the adults and older children. The baby won't know what you are doing. Themes do make for good pictures and memories. There are several themes promoted by the party supply stores. It is convenient to find all your supplies in one place and coordinated around one theme. Some suggestions for babies are: Teddy bear picnic, Safari Animals, Little Prince, Little Princess. Keep it soft and keep it safe. No need for clowns or balloon animal creators at this first birthday.

Step 4. FOOD. Any food will do for the adults and older kids. Pizza or hamburgers are always fun. Baby still eats baby food, so don't fret over the food. But, you must have a beautiful Birthday Cake.
Top the birthday cake with something that matches the theme, and be quick to remove it before baby puts it in her mouth. Write Happy Birthday in icing on top of the birthday cake. Be sure to include one candle. AND DON'T FORGET THE ICE CREAM!

Step 5. DECORATIONS. Try to match the theme with banners saying Happy Birthday, balloons, streamers, paper plates, cups and napkins. No need for flowers and candles like an adult party. Remember to keep it soft and safe.

Step 6. ENTERTAINMENT. Babies like to watch and play with other kids. Be sure to supervise them and just let them have fun. Don't go to the expense of hiring entertainment until she is a little older. Keep the party short -about 1 ½ hours. All little ones will be over stimulated if it goes much longer. Make sure someone is assigned to take lots of photos and that they are well supplied with freshly charged batteries and empty photo card if the camera is digital. Or, if your camera uses film, be sure to have plenty of film rolls. Set up a video camera to capture the entire party or assign one person to carry it around to record the memories.

Step 7. GIFTS. Everyone will bring the baby a gift—stuffed animals, cloth books, clothes, games, toys. But, don't be surprised if she is more interested in the bows and wrapping. And, everything will go straight into her mouth. Keep an eye on these wrapping and bows since you may have to retrieve one that you suspect is toxic. Also watch out for small parts of games. Babies can choke easily. 

Remember. This is the most important birthday of our lives! Treat it as such and enjoy your little one the whole day.

Birthday parties are always so much fun for kids! Planning the party can be just as much fun for us. If your child has asked you for a costume themed birthday party here are some hints on how to make that happen. Red Carpet Party is option number one. This requires a red carpet, a dress up box with fancy dresses and costume jewelry, a camera, and the right lighting. The red carpet can easily be created with a piece of fabric or plastic table cloth from the dollar store. Have the children dress up and have their pictures taken on the "red carpet." The pictures make nice favors for your guests. You could even request the gifts to be "red carpet" themed.

When I Grow Up...This option is fun to do! First we start with the invitations. Here we request that guests arrive dressed as what they want to be when they grow up. Expect to see fire fighters, police men, construction workers, maybe a suit or two and decorate accordingly. Happy Birthday can be spelled out using pictures of tools or other equipment used on the job. The cake can be shaped like one of the tools used in your child's grown up dreams. Take pictures of each guest as they arrive in costume to take home or scrapbook. Princess Tea This one is great for girls!! Have each guest arrive in their best "princess" dress. Decorations can be anything from a bolt of tulle draped around the table to Mardi Gras beads to paper cut outs of tea cups and saucers. Guests will enjoy making a princess crown and playing as princesses play. Always in proper attire and ladylike, of course.Photo ShootThis option is great for smaller sized parties. Create your own studio with a colorful blanket and props from around the house, like a chair, table for posing, and outfit appropriate accessories. Planning a child's birthday party can be both a fun and challenging experience. Allowing the kids to create their own pizza means planners do not have the headache of getting the wrong amount of sauce on the pizza. They also do not have to worry about getting the wrong topping combination. The kids can create their pizza anyway they like it with as much or as little sauce and toppings as they desire. Let them be as creative as they want to be, it's their pizza! They may want to design a happy face, or a clown face or simply load their pizza with cheese. It's their pizza, they get to eat it; they can create their dish however they like it best.

Kids creating their own pizzas also saves on some of the planning for activities as building their own pizza helps with their food and is also a useful, yet fun, activity. This allows for more time to be given planning other activities such as games and music.

HOW TO CELEBRATE A BIRTHDAY WHEN THE RECIPIENT IS IN THE HOSPITAL

It is difficult for anyone to be in the hospital, but it can be especially hard when someone is in the hospital on their birthday. Children who have medical issues that may keep them in the hospital for an extended period of time often find this happening. Birthdays should not be neglected just because someone is in the hospital, this is a time of celebration of life and having loved ones around is a great healer. There are many ways to celebrate a persons birthday while they are in the hospital.

First of all, check with the hospital’s policy regarding birthday celebrations, this will help to avoid any interruptions or hard feelings during the celebrations. Providing the patient is not on a controlled diet, plan to bring a small birthday cake in, or some cupcakes that are decorated with a birthday theme. If the patient is in a semi private room offer some of the goodies to their roommate, providing it does not go against doctor’s orders.

Ordering balloons to bring or be delivered ahead of time is a nice way to surprise the patient and will make them feel better as well. While celebrating in the hospital room, guests can play games or even have craft time with the patient, such as coloring faces on face masks and wearing them during the party. If one would like to surprise the patient, and they are able to go for a wheelchair ride, one person could take them on a “walk” while another does some light decorating in the room. Imagine their surprise when they come back and see the Happy Birthday decorations.

There are some things one should be careful about when celebrating a birthday in a hospital. As previously mentioned, one should check the hospital’s policy regarding birthday celebrations, another is making sure the patient can eat whatever treats you may bring them. Some individuals are on a strict diet while in the hospital and eating cake may not be the best thing for them. If this is the case, check into sugar free Jello as a possible alternative or slip a flower on the hospital meal service tray. Also, be respectful of the other patients on the floor. Do not invite a large number of people to the patients room. Many hospitals have a limit on how many visitors can be in a patient(s) room at one time. Another good reason is the noise level is bound to rise with people trying to talk over one another; this could disturb other patients on the floor who need their rest. Having too many people in the room can also hinder the nurse or doctor from performing their duties correctly.

If one considers others and really would like to celebrate their loved one’s birthday while they are hospitalized, then it can be done with little to no fuss or interruption to the medical staff. Plus, the smile on the patient’s face (and their appreciation during a stressful time) will be worth the effort.
